Poker is a fascinating card game that has enthralled millions of people worldwide. When you are just starting out in poker, the game can seem confusing and complex at first. But no worry! In this blog post, we will explain the basic poker rules for beginners to give you an easy introduction to the poker world.
1. The aim of the game
The goal in poker is to win the pot, which is made up of the players' bets. The pot is awarded to the player with the best hand, or if all other players fold their cards, to the last remaining person playing.
2. The ranking of the hands
Before playing poker, it is important to understand the ranking of different poker hands. Poker hand rankings indicate which hand combinations are stronger than others in poker. From strongest to weakest hand, these are: The Royal Flush is the highest hand in poker. It consists of the cards A, K, Q, J, 10, all of the same suit. A Straight flush is any consecutive five-card sequence of the same suit. The quadruplet (Four of a kind) consists of four cards of the same rank and any fifth card. A Full House consists of three cards of the same rank (Triplet) and a pair. A Flush is composed of five cards of the same suit without having a consecutive order. A Straight consists of any consecutive five-card rank, regardless of suit. The Triplet (Three of a kind) consists of three cards of the same rank and any two other cards. two pairs (Two-Pair) consists of two pairs of cards of the same rank and any fifth card. A couple (one pair) consists of two cards of the same rank and any three other cards. The high card is the weakest hand and is formed when none of the above combinations are achieved. In this case, the hand with the highest card wins.
3. The Game Rounds
Poker consists of several game rounds. The most popular variant is Texas Hold'em, where everyone is dealt two cards face down and five community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table. The players must form their hand from the face down and common cards. There are four betting rounds: preflop, flop, turn and river. In each round, players have the option to bet, raise, call, or fold.
4. The course of a game round
In the preflop round, all players receive their face down cards. The players then have the option to bet, raise or fold. The first three community cards, the flop, are then dealt face up. In the following round, the turn, a fourth community card is dealt, followed by the river, the fifth and final community card. After the river, the final round of betting occurs and if there are multiple players left, there is a showdown.
5. The showdown
At the showdown, all remaining players show their cards. The player with the best hand wins the pot. If two or more players have the same hand rank, the pot is split.
